CBS “60 Minutes” reporter Steve Kroft investigates a pressing question: “Are robots taking our jobs?”
The CBS video segment begins with the premise that the proliferation of robots in the workforce assists companies in maximizing profits and productivity (arguably return on investment ROI to the stakeholder) but are not necessarily creating more jobs (societal investment), a troubling idea for a struggling economy saddled with high unemployment. Kroft spoke with Massachusetts Institute of Technology MIT professors Erik Brynjolfsson and Andrew McAfee, who say their research shows that the rise of robots in the workplace is “absolutely to blame for the curious shortness of jobs even as the broader national economy recovers.”

We think robots are suitable for tasks that might be harmful or dangerous to humans, but must be performed to assist in furthering benefits to society. This may include tasks such as locating and detonating improvised explosive devices IED, radioactive facility maintenance and avoiding human repetitive motion injuries RMI, to name a few.
